Seahawks beanies: which knit hat for a December game

By . Published 2026-09-16, updated 2026-09-16.

Lumen Field in December is cold, wet and windy, and the upper deck is open at the ends. A beanie is not a style choice for a late-season game; it is the difference between watching the fourth quarter and leaving at halftime. This guide covers the types, the one the team actually wears, and the details that matter more than the logo.

The four types

Cuffed knit. The standard beanie: a ribbed knit with the bottom edge folded up into a double-thick cuff over the ears. Warmest of the four and the most common Seahawks style. Most have the logo on the cuff.

Pom beanie. A cuffed knit with a pom on top. The pom is decorative, but this is the sideline style, so it is also the one that matches what the coaches wear on television.

Uncuffed or slouch. A longer knit with no cuff that sits back on the head. Less coverage over the ears, more of a streetwear look. Fine for a 1:05 kickoff in October, not the pick for a night game in December.

Skull cap. A thin, close-fitting knit or fleece cap that goes under a hood or a helmet. It is what you wear under the hood of a rain shell when it is 38 degrees and raining sideways, which happens at Lumen Field every year. Low volume, low warmth on its own, but it layers.

The sideline knit

New Era, not Nike, holds the NFL’s on-field headwear license, so the knit hat the Seahawks players and coaches wear during cold-weather games is a New Era product: the NFL Sideline Sport Knit, a cuffed pom beanie in that season’s sideline colorway. The graphic changes each year, which is why you will see listings for 2022, 2023 and other years’ sideline knits; they are all legitimate, just different seasons. The current-season version is the one on the sideline now.

The fabric on the sideline knit is a polyester and nylon blend rather than acrylic, which is what makes it hold its shape when wet. Cheaper acrylic knits sag once they get rained on.

Cold, wet, or both

Seattle’s problem in December is rarely just cold; it is cold and wet. A beanie’s warmth comes from the knit trapping air, and a soaked knit stops doing that. Three things help:

  1. A fleece lining. Many Seahawks beanies have a fleece band inside the cuff. It is warmer and it wicks.
  2. Synthetic over acrylic. The sideline knit’s poly-nylon blend dries faster than the acrylic most novelty beanies use.
  3. A hood over it. A skull cap or a low-profile cuffed knit under a rain shell hood is the warmest combination in the building. A pom does not fit under a hood, which is the one practical argument against it.

The seating chart guide covers which sections are under the canopy and which are open to the weather.

Women’s and youth

The women’s line uses the same silhouettes with a slightly smaller crown and, in New Era’s case, a cable-knit option with the pom. Youth beanies are sized down. Neither is just a colorway; the fit is different.

Where to buy

  • Seahawks Pro Shop: knit hats, the team store’s beanie section, always carrying the current sideline knit.
  • NFL Shop: Seahawks hats, filter to knit.
  • Lids for the widest range of brands.
  • Amazon carries New Era’s licensed knits; the women’s cable-knit pom beanie in navy is listed here. We link to the exact item rather than a search.

What to skip

Novelty knits with a built-in beard, LED logos, or a “12th Man” wordmark. The first two are gag gifts, and the last is a phrase the team does not own and licensed makers do not print. A plain cuffed knit with the logo is the one you will still be wearing in five years.

Questions

What beanie do the Seahawks wear on the sideline?

The New Era NFL Sideline Sport Knit, a cuffed knit with a pom, updated each season. New Era holds the NFL's on-field headwear license, so the knit the players and coaches wear in cold weather is theirs.

Cuffed or uncuffed?

Cuffed is warmer and covers the ears; uncuffed sits higher and looks more like a watch cap. For a Lumen Field game in December, cuffed.

Are Seahawks beanies one size?

Nearly all of them. Knit stretches, so adult beanies are one size fits most. Youth versions are sized down, not just labelled.
