Vintage and throwback Seahawks hats: what 'retro' actually means
Three keywords, one product. “Vintage Seahawks hat,” “retro Seahawks hat” and “throwback Seahawks hat” are searched in almost identical numbers every month, and every one of them lands on the same thing: a cap in the royal blue, forest green and silver that the team wore from 1976 until the 2002 rebrand. This guide covers what that look is, who makes it, and how to tell a licensed throwback from a royal-blue colorway of the modern logo.
The look you are looking for
The Seahawks played their first 26 seasons in royal blue. The helmet was silver, the trim was forest green, and the logo was the original Seahawks head, a flatter, more angular bird than the one on the field today. In 2002 the team moved to Seahawks Blue and a redrawn logo, and in 2012 Nike’s redesign brought College Navy and Action Green. Everything sold as vintage, retro or throwback references the 1976 to 2001 era.
Two details separate a real throwback from a modern cap that happens to be blue:
- The logo. A throwback uses the original head, not the current one. It is squarer, the eye is different, and the beak sits lower.
- The blue. Royal, not navy. Under store lighting the two can look close; in daylight the throwback is unmistakably brighter.
Who makes it
- Mitchell & Ness is the throwback brand. Its Seahawks line is built entirely around the royal blue era and includes snapbacks, fitteds and knits. The classic is the royal blue snapback with the original logo and a green underbrim.
- New Era runs throwback graphics through its standard silhouettes, so you can get the old logo on a 59FIFTY fitted or a 9FIFTY snapback. If you want the throwback look but prefer New Era’s fit, this is the route.
- ’47 does a softer version, usually on its Clean Up (relaxed dad-cap) or MVP shapes, in washed royal blue. These read as vintage even when new because the fabric is pre-faded.
All three are licensed. The difference is fit and finish, not legitimacy.
Snapback, fitted or dad hat
The throwback era was the snapback era, and most throwback Seahawks caps are flat-brim snapbacks because that is what a 1980s cap looked like. If you want the look but not the flat brim, ’47’s throwbacks are curved and unstructured, and New Era offers the old logo on the curved 9FORTY. Fitted throwbacks exist in New Era’s 59FIFTY; they are the most expensive and the truest to a 1980s team-issued cap.
The snapback guide covers how the closures differ and the fitted guide covers sizing.
Where to buy
- Lids: Seahawks vintage and throwback, the deepest single throwback selection, with Mitchell & Ness, New Era and ’47 side by side.
- Seahawks Pro Shop: Mitchell & Ness collection, the team’s own store, which stocks the full M&N line.
- Fanatics carries the same three brands; filter by “throwback.”
Mitchell & Ness also sells direct at mitchellandness.com, which is worth checking for colorways the retailers do not carry.
The actually-vintage market
A cap that is literally from the 1980s or 1990s is a different purchase: eBay, Etsy and vintage sports shops, priced by condition and rarity rather than by retailer. Sports Specialties, Starter and AJD were the licensed makers of the era, and a genuine one carries their tag. New “vintage-style” caps and actual vintage caps are both fine things to buy; just know which one a listing is.
Why this look is having a moment
The 2025 title run put the modern Seahawks look everywhere, and the throwback is the counter-programming. It also connects to the players on the legends page: Largent, Kennedy and Zorn played in royal blue, and a throwback cap is the piece of gear that goes with a Largent jersey. Expect the throwback line to expand for the franchise’s 50th season in 2026.

Questions
What is the difference between a vintage, retro and throwback Seahawks hat?
Nothing, in practice. All three describe caps using the original 1976 to 2001 look: royal blue, forest green and silver, with the old-style Seahawks head. Retailers use the three words interchangeably. A genuinely old cap from that era is the only thing that is literally vintage.
Who makes licensed throwback Seahawks hats?
Mitchell & Ness is the main throwback brand, with New Era and '47 both producing throwback lines under their own silhouettes. All three are licensed.
Do throwback hats use the current Seahawks logo?
No. The point of a throwback is the pre-2002 mark. If a cap uses the current logo in royal blue, it is a colorway, not a throwback.
