Tuesday notebook, Week 8: what changed before the Bears come to Lumen Field

Seattle beat Kansas City on Sunday night and has a longer week than usual: Chicago comes to Lumen Field for Monday Night Football on November 2 at 5:15 p.m. Pacific on ESPN. Because the game is on a Monday, the practice reports move back a day, to Thursday, Friday and Saturday, with game statuses on Saturday.

Where things stand

Seattle is 4-3 after a 20-3 win over Kansas City on October 25, the Chiefs’ first loss. It is second in the NFC West, two games behind San Francisco, which lost 29-20 at Atlanta on Sunday to fall to 6-1. The Rams won 35-21 at Las Vegas to go 3-4, and Arizona is 2-5 after losing 30-16 at home to Denver, per ESPN’s results. San Francisco has no game in Week 8 on ESPN’s schedule. Chicago is 5-2 and has not played since beating New England 30-24 at Soldier Field on Thursday, October 22, so it comes in with eleven days between games to Seattle’s eight.

Our Week 7 recap has how Seattle held Kansas City to 213 yards and a field goal.

Injuries

Mike Macdonald spoke twice on Monday, on his Seattle Sports 710 AM show in the morning and at his press conference in the afternoon. Per the club’s reports from the radio show and from the press conference:

  • Charles Cross (ankle), the left tackle, was hurt in the fourth quarter on Sunday. “Charles has an ankle. We’ll see how long it’s going to be,” Macdonald said. Asked whether injured reserve was a possibility: “We haven’t had that conversation yet.” Asked about reports that Cross could miss time: “I saw that report. That didn’t come from me or our trainer.” And: “It’s Monday, he’s got an ankle, and we’re going to take it day by day from there.”
  • Rashid Shaheed (knee) did not play in the second half against Kansas City. On the radio: “Rashid, early returns are positive. Any time the knee’s involved, you’re holding your breath, so right now, let’s just say it’s positive.” In the afternoon: “No update on Rashid from this morning. Again, early returns are positive, how long that means, I’m not sure.”
  • Velus Jones Jr. (hamstring) did not return on Sunday. “We’re not sure the severity. So we’ll see with Velus.”
  • Jadarian Price and Zach Charbonnet. Price, the rookie running back, has spent four games on injured reserve with a chest injury and will practice this week, per the club. Charbonnet, back from the torn ACL he suffered last season, will practice fully again and has a chance at his 2026 debut. “The situation’s a little different, obviously the length of the injuries,” Macdonald said. “Could they both play? Yes. Could neither play? Yes. Could either one play? Yes.”
  • Drew Lock (elbow) was inactive against Kansas City. “Not sure on the severity or how long it’s going to be,” Macdonald said after the game, per the club.

The first practice report for both teams is due Thursday, October 29, and goes on the injury report when it posts.

Roster moves

  • Monday: linebacker Jimmy Ciarlo and cornerback Trevon Diggs reverted to the practice squad after their elevations for the Kansas City game, per the club’s transactions page. Those are automatic, not new signings.
  • Tuesday: none on the club’s transactions page as of Tuesday morning.

The roster was checked against the team’s official page on Tuesday morning and matches it: 53 on the active roster, seven on injured reserve, 17 on the practice squad, one on practice squad injured reserve and one commissioner exempt. The official page has now caught up with every move through Monday’s two reverts.

The line

As of Tuesday morning, October 27, DraftKings has Seattle by 3.5, with a total of 46.5 and a moneyline of Seattle -170, Chicago +142 (checked at 6:37 a.m. Pacific through ESPN). On Monday morning DraftKings had Seattle by 3 with the same total and moneyline. VegasInsider’s consensus at 6:38 a.m. was Seattle -3.5 and 46.5; Bet365, DraftKings and Kalshi have Seattle -3.5, and BetMGM, Caesars, FanDuel, Hard Rock and Fanatics -3. It opened Seattle -4.5 with a total of 47.5. ESPN’s matchup predictor, a model and not a line, gives Seattle 54.7 percent. Through seven games Seattle is 2-3-2 against the number we published each game morning and 4-3 on totals; our odds page has every game, and our pick, Seattle 23-20, is in the Week 8 preview. At 3.5, that score would be a win that does not cover. It is here because fans ask, not as advice. Washington allows sports betting only in person at tribal casinos.

What Chicago said

The Bears had not posted anything new from Ben Johnson since Friday, October 23, by Tuesday morning, so these are his comments the day after the New England win, per the club. On second-year receiver Luther Burden III, who had four catches for 130 yards and a touchdown, all in the first half: “What’s always stood out about him is he’s elite with the ball in his hands.” On a run defense that held New England to 70 yards on 17 carries, a week after holding Atlanta’s Bijan Robinson to 61 yards on nine: “It starts with technique and fundamentals, and that’s something that we’ve been harping on up front from the springtime.” That is the test for a Seattle run game that, per the club, got going against Kansas City behind Emanuel Wilson’s best game as a Seahawk.

On tight end Cole Kmet, who will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury, per the club: “He’s going to be sorely missed. Really, he’s Chicago.” Chicago placed Kmet on injured reserve on October 23, and the same day defensive lineman Montez Sweat had his suspension lifted by the commissioner, per the club. Caleb Williams threw for 308 yards and two touchdowns with no turnovers against New England, his second straight 300-yard game since returning from his hamstring injury.
