Week 5 preview: Seahawks vs 49ers, prediction, odds and injury report
Final: 49ers 32, Seahawks 29. We picked Seattle 24-21 and the under. Both were wrong: San Francisco won by three, and the game went over, 61 points against the 47.5 total in this preview and the 46.5 on game morning. The preview said the game turned on getting to Purdy without the personal fouls, and Seattle did sack him three times, the first sacks he had taken this season. What it did not see coming was four Seattle turnovers, which the 49ers turned into 21 points before halftime. The preview below is as published before kickoff.
The game the NFC West has been waiting for comes early. San Francisco is 4-0 and Seattle is 3-1, and on Sunday at 1:25 p.m. Pacific on FOX the 49ers come to Lumen Field on their first road trip since the season opener in Melbourne. Both teams won on Sunday in similar fashion: Seattle beat the Chargers 30-23 on four takeaways while being outgained, and San Francisco beat Denver 24-14 after a 3-3 first half, with a forced fumble on a punt return setting up its first touchdown. A Seattle win ties the division.
The injury picture
Saturday’s moves: Seattle downgraded Irv Charles (knee) to out, since he is still on injured reserve, put Julian Neal on injured reserve and signed cornerback Trevon Diggs from the practice squad, per the club’s announcement; the 49ers activated Mykel Williams from the PUP list, removing his questionable status, per their announcement. Friday’s final report is in, posted by both clubs a little after 3 p.m. Pacific. Seattle ruled out linebacker Chazz Surratt (calf), cornerback Julian Neal (hamstring) and running back Zach Charbonnet (knee), who stays on the PUP list; George Holani (ribs, knee) and Irv Charles (knee, still on injured reserve) were listed questionable. Leonard Williams (ankle) practiced fully Friday with no game status, and the club’s report says Mike Macdonald confirmed he is ready to play; Ty Okada (hamstring) has no status and returns to the lineup. San Francisco ruled out Nick Bosa (knee, calf), James Thompson Jr. (ankle), Kyle Juszczyk (knee) and Marques Sigle (ankle), none of whom practiced all week; Upton Stout (shoulder), who sat out Friday, and Mykel Williams (knee), who practiced fully, were listed questionable, per the Seahawks’ report and the 49ers’ report. The day-by-day table is on the injury report. On Wednesday Seattle held out only linebacker Chazz Surratt (calf) for an injury, with Jaxon Smith-Njigba resting; Leonard Williams (ankle), Zach Charbonnet (knee) and Irv Charles (knee) were among seven players limited, and Ty Okada (hamstring) was a full participant. For San Francisco, Nick Bosa (knee, calf), James Thompson Jr. (ankle), Kyle Juszczyk (knee), Marques Sigle (ankle) and Upton Stout (shoulder) did not practice, and Mykel Williams (knee) and Mike Evans (ribs) were limited, per the club’s Week 5 injury report. On Thursday Williams did not practice, along with Surratt; Beau Stephens and Tyrice Knight moved up to full, cornerback Julian Neal (hamstring) was added as limited, and Okada was full again. For San Francisco, Mike Evans (ribs) went from limited to not practicing and Upton Stout (shoulder) moved up to limited. This is what the clubs said after Sunday’s games.
Seattle. Leonard Williams left the Chargers game in the fourth quarter with an ankle injury and walked off on his own. Mike Macdonald after the game: “It doesn’t look serious right now, which is positive news. So we’ll see.” On his radio show Monday: “I’d say we’re optimistic for the game, but we’ve got to see how the week goes.” Safety Ty Okada (hamstring) was inactive for a fourth straight game after being listed questionable; Macdonald said, “Ty has a shot to play this week.” Rodney Thomas II has started in his place. Running back Zach Charbonnet, whose practice window off the physically unable to perform list opened last week, is eligible from this game, but Macdonald said Monday he will not be activated for it, per the club’s report; Macdonald: “He’s going to get team reps this week.” Jadarian Price (chest) is on injured reserve and must miss at least four games, so Emanuel Wilson, who ran for 81 yards and scored twice on Sunday, stays the lead back. On Tuesday the team signed running back Robert Henry Jr. off the Washington Commanders’ practice squad and added Dontae McMillan to the practice squad, waiving safety AJ Finley to make room, per the club’s report; Finley cleared waivers and re-signed to the practice squad on Wednesday. Also on Wednesday, receiver Irv Charles was designated to return to practice from injured reserve, per the club’s report.
San Francisco. For the Denver game the 49ers ruled out defensive linemen Nick Bosa (knee, calf), James Thompson Jr. (ankle) and Mykel Williams (knee), who had his practice window off the PUP list opened last week after a torn ACL in 2025 and is eligible to return this week. Mike Evans (ribs) and Dre Greenlaw (quadricep) were questionable and both played: Evans led the team with 76 receiving yards, and Greenlaw had 12 tackles and forced a fumble. Kyle Shanahan on Evans: “He never grimaced, never changed his stride or anything, how he’s carrying himself.” Keion White (hamstring) and Jaden Dugger (shoulder) were also questionable. On Monday Shanahan said Bosa and Thompson are not expected to return this week, and Williams could be activated at the end of the week if he keeps progressing in practice. Fullback Kyle Juszczyk (knee) will miss a few weeks, safety Marques Sigle (high ankle sprain) will miss time, and Upton Stout (shoulder) is day to day, per the club’s report. On Friday, October 9, the 49ers released defensive lineman Ogbo Okoronkwo, who had two tackles and a sack in four games this season, per the club’s announcement, which did not say what the roster spot is for.
What the 49ers have done
Four wins: 27-7 over the Rams in Melbourne, 35-13 over Miami, 36-30 over Arizona and 24-14 over Denver, the last three at home. They have scored 122 points and allowed 64. Brock Purdy has completed 79 of 113 passes for 1,007 yards, 11 touchdowns and one interception, and he has not been sacked in four games; the 49ers have turned the ball over twice all season. Christian McCaffrey scored on Sunday, George Kittle broke a 56-yard touchdown with 2:15 left to put Denver away, and Deebo Samuel Sr. had runs of 22 and 20 yards. Shanahan: “I thought Deebo was huge today.”
The defense held Denver to 296 yards and kept it out of the end zone until the final four minutes, without Bosa. Shanahan said of Greenlaw, “He had an unbelievable game… Unbelievable season so far.”
The matchups that decide it
Seattle’s pass rush against a line that has not allowed a sack. Seattle sacked Justin Herbert four times on Sunday, by four different players, and the last one, Uchenna Nwosu’s strip-sack, ended the game. San Francisco has played four games without allowing one, and left tackle Trent Williams (neck) practiced fully last Friday. Something gives.
Seattle’s discipline. Seattle was flagged 14 times for 150 yards against the Chargers, and Macdonald counted seven personal fouls: “That’s not us, and that’s not going to be how we play football around here.” Two roughing-the-passer penalties kept alive the 85-yard drive that let the Chargers back into the game. A 4-0 team with a quarterback who throws one interception in 113 attempts does not need that help.
The run game on both sides. Seattle ran for 138 yards without Price or Charbonnet, after 44 yards at Washington, and it will be without Charbonnet again. But the Chargers ran for 147 yards on Seattle, and Macdonald said, “The run game on defense isn’t good enough.” San Francisco ran for 140 against Denver.
Turnovers. Seattle went minus-three at Washington and lost, then plus-three against the Chargers and won. The 49ers have given the ball away twice in four games. Seattle’s four takeaways Sunday were the difference; it will probably need more than one this week.
The line
As of Sunday morning, October 11 (checked at 6:40 a.m. Pacific through ESPN), DraftKings has Seattle favored by 3, with a total of 46.5 and a moneyline of Seattle -166, San Francisco +140; VegasInsider’s consensus was also Seattle -3 and 46.5, with every book it lists at 3 except Hard Rock at 3.5 and every total at 46.5 except Rivers Casino at 46. DraftKings opened at Seattle -3.5 with a total of 46.5 and a moneyline of -198 and +164, dropped to 2.5 by Monday morning and came back to 3 on Tuesday with the total at 47.5; by Friday afternoon the spread was unchanged and the total had fallen two points to 45.5, it held there through Saturday’s roster moves, and overnight it went back up to 46.5, where it opened. ESPN’s matchup predictor disagrees with the book: it gives San Francisco a 55.9 percent chance to win. We will track how the number moves on our odds page, where Seattle is 1-1-2 against the spread this season.

Prediction
Seattle 24, San Francisco 21. The 49ers are the better team on paper through four weeks, and Purdy has 11 touchdown passes to one interception. But Seattle is at home, its defense just took the ball away four times, and San Francisco’s pass rush played Sunday without Bosa. The game turns on whether Seattle can get to Purdy without the personal fouls. Under 47.5 is the side we would take if we took sides: the 49ers’ defense has allowed more than 14 points once. We revisit the pick after Friday’s final injury reports.
